June 3, 2005

On Saturday, June 4, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer Hoyt Yee will award certificates to nine mentors participating in the project “Support Program for Lifelong Learning and Education of Young and Adults in Bijelo Polje” at the Cultural Center in Bijelo Polje. The project was initiated by the NGO “School That Gives More,” and was funded by the people of the United States through the Consulate’s Democracy Commission Small Grants Program. The Mayor of Bijelo Polje, Tarzan Milosevic, will also participate in the ceremony. 327 students from 11 elementary and secondary schools, unemployed persons, apprentices and university students from Bijelo Polje attended various courses organized by the project, including computer and English language courses, journalism and ecological workshops, and small business start-up training programs.

On Saturday as well, Principal Officer Yee and Mayor Milosevic will inaugurate the reconstructed and newly equipped laboratory of the Center for Continental Fruits in Bijelo Polje. The project, realized as part of the Community Revitalization through Democratic Action Program – Economy (CRDA-E), is funded by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the U.S. non-government development organization, CHF International/ Montenegro.

The U.S. Government invested € 24,823 in the procurement of modern equipment for analyzing agricultural products and soil, staff training for operating the new equipment and painting the premises of the Center. The goal of the project is to foster the Center’s capabilities to assist local farmers in improving the safety and quality of agriculture products, increase income from farming and fruit growing, and strengthen the competitiveness of agriculture products on the local, import and export markets. It will also help the Center to become an agency authorized to issue safety and quality certificates to producers and processors and improve general conditions for agriculture business in the North of Montenegro.

Journalists interested in covering the certificate awards ceremony should be at the Cultural Center in Bijelo Polje no later than 10:45 on June 4. Those interested in covering the reconstructed and newly equipped laboratory of the Center for Continental Fruits should be at the Center no later than 12:45 on the same day.
