Workshop of the Borlaug Agriculture Science and Technology Fellowship Program

April 5, 2006
Consulate of the United States of America
Podgorica

On April 6, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer Arlene Ferrill will open the Norman E. Borlaug Science and Technology Fellowship Program workshop, organized by Hassan Ahmed, Agricultural Attache of the Office of Agricultural Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade. Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Milosav Andjelic, Texas A&M University Coordinator Mike McWhorter, and a representative of the Ministry of Science and Education will also participate.

The workshop will feature presentations of research work conducted by four Montenegrin graduates of the Fellowship. Following a month-long visit to the U.S., this workshop is an integral part of the Borlaug program which gives the graduating Fellows an opportunity to continue their collaboration with their U.S. mentors and to share their knowledge with their colleagues throughout Serbia and Montenegro.

The Borlaug Fellowship program, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was launched in 2004 as part of a larger U.S. technical assistance program of research and capacity building in Serbia and Montenegro. The program aims to build a network of Serbian and Montenegrin scientists that can participate in science-based policy formulation related to bilateral and international agricultural issues.

The 2005 Serbia and Montenegro Borlaug Fellowship program consisted of month-long mentoring visits to several U.S. host universities. These visits took place between September and November 2005. U.S. host institutions included Cornell, Iowa State, Texas A&M and Michigan State universities. Participants learned new research techniques, accessed laboratories, and attended professional workshops and seminars. Research areas included: biotechnology, microbiology, plant pathology, animal and plant health diagnostics and food safety.

Journalists interested in covering the Workshop should be at the Crna Gora Hotel in Podgorica no later than 09:45 on April 6th.
