U. S. Provides Counter-Proliferation Training for Montenegrin and Serbian Law Enforcement Officials

On December 9, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer Arlene Ferrill will award certificates to participants in a special five-day training program on detecting and preventing the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction at the Police Academy in Danilovgrad. Deputy Director of the Police Academy, Radenko Cakovic, U.S. Senior Police Advisor to Montenegro, Larry Plott, U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Training Coordinator, Major Lance Peterson, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) representative Peter Liston will also participate in the ceremony.
The training was funded by the American people, through the U.S. Department of State's Export Control and Border Security Program (EXBS) and is implemented by instructors from the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). 40 officials of the Montenegrin and Serbian Ministries of Interior, including Border Police units and representatives of the Customs Administrations and Financial Units participated in the training.
The Counter-Proliferation Awareness Training complements the 2005 U.S. Assistance Program for Police Reform in Montenegro funded by the American people through the Department of State and the Department of Justice. The program provides training and equipment valued at over $2.5 million to support the reform and modernization of Montenegro’s police. This assistance also includes a Resident Police Advisor to the Police Academy and the Ministry of Interior; the renovation of and equipment for classrooms and other facilities of the Police Academy; equipment and training for a modern forensics laboratory; and training for police officers on investigating trafficking and other organized crime.
