U.S. Consulate Supports Ecological Public Awareness Campaign in Montenegro

June 7, 2005

On Wednesday, June 8 U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee, will meet organizers and participants of the project “Whose is this Garbage of Mine?” at the Elementary School “Sutjeska” in Podgorica. The project was initiated by the NGO “Lynx” in close cooperation with NTV Montena, and funded by the people of the United States through the Consulate’s Democracy Commission Small Grants Program.

Mr. Yee will discuss with project participants the activities and results of their ecological campaign. The project goal is to raise public awareness about the importance of a clean and safe ecological environment and to motivate and link together all relevant state institutions in order to resolve waste disposal issues. The NGO “Lynx” has organized several public discussions and public classes for students in the elementary schools as part of the project. The participants also created and distributed ecological brochures, produced and aired a series of documentaries and TV spots, and placed large billboards with the campaign slogan “Whose is this Garbage of Mine?” They also organized clean-up events with students and citizens of Podgorica.

Journalists interested in covering the meeting of Mr. Yee with representatives of the NGO “Lynx” should be at the Elementary School “Sutjeska” in Podgorica no later than 11:45 on Wednesday, June 8.
