U.S. Supports Female Victims of Violence

June 30, 2005

On Friday, July 1, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee, Head of the General Administrative Department of the Ministry of Interior, Nada Vukanic, Podgorica Basic Court Judge, Ana Vukovic, and the Center for Social Welfare will highlight progress made on the project “Help and Support for Female Victims of Violence” in Podgorica. The project was funded by the American people through the Consulate’s Democracy Commission Small Grants Program and implemented by the NGO “SOS Hotline for Female and Child Victims of Violence.”

The project’s goals are to help and support women and children at risk by monitoring existing laws related to victim protection, to help prevent and stop abuse, and to initiate legislation which would punish violence against women as a crime and a violation of their human rights. The program also hopes to raise public awareness of gender inequality and patriarchal attitudes towards violence in the family and society.

“SOS Hotline for Female and Child Victims of Violence” offers a daily SOS hotline at tel: 081/664-432, legal assistance on Tuesdays and Fridays, and counseling on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All services are available from 17:00 to 21:00

Journalists interested in covering this event should be at the Press Center KIC Budo Tomovic, Objekat Banja, Obala Ribnice in Podgorica, no later than 10:45 on July 1.
