U.S. Supports Police Forensics Laboratory

May 10, 2005

On May 11, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee, Minister of Interior of Montenegro, Dragan Djurovic, U.S. Advisor on Forensics, Terry Mills, U.S. Senior Police Advisor to Montenegro Larry Plott, and Head of Forensics Laboratory of the Ministry of Interior, Ratko Jankovic, will hold a press conference to announce the beginning of a project to help the MUP create a modern forensics laboratory at the Ministry of Interior in Podgorica.

The project is funded by a $600,000 grant from the American people through the Department of State and the Department of Justice. The project includes the equipment and training necessary for the establishment of a modern forensics laboratory. This assistance is part of the 2005 U.S. Assistance Program for Police Reform in Montenegro, which will provide training and equipment valued at over $2.5 million to support the reform and modernization of Montenegro’s police. This assistance also includes a Resident Police Advisor to the Police Academy and the Ministry of Interior; the renovation and equipment for the classrooms and other facilities of the Police Academy; and training of police officers on investigating trafficking and other organized crime. The United States also plans to provide additional training and assistance to help implement the Law on Police adopted by the Montenegrin Parliament on April 26.

Journalists interested in covering the press conference should be at the Ministry of Interior in Podgorica no later than 13:45 on Wednesday, May 11.
