U.S. Assists Reconstruction of Water Supply System in Herceg Novi

July 5, 2005

On Wednesday July 6, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro, Michael C. Polt, the Mayor of Herceg Novi, Dejan Mandić, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Urban Planning, Boro Vučinić , and the Chief of Party of International Relief and Development (IRD), Robert Harris, will formally mark the completion of the coastal earmark water supply network project in Herceg Novi.

The project was funded by the American people through a partnership between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Waterworks and Sewage Company of the Municipality of Herceg Novi, and was implemented by IRD. USAID invested approximately $232,450 in the water supply network reconstruction and the Municipality of Herceg Novi provided an additional $79,300. The improvements are part of USAID’s $12 million support for coastal economic and environmental development.

The project included the reconstruction of ten sections of the waterworks distribution network and the two main pipelines in the Municipality of Herceg Novi. As a result of the new, high quality pipelines, huge water losses detected each year in the old waterworks system will be significantly reduced and an improved water supply will be available to citizens and tourists in Herceg Novi. The Waterworks and Sewage Company estimates that over €40,000 can be saved monthly with appropriate usage and maintenance of the reconstructed waterworks system.

Journalists interested in covering the event should be in front of the Herceg Novi Water Works Company at 10 Hercegovačka Street on Wednesday, July 6th, no later than 11:00.
