U. S. Provides Training to Montenegrin Law Enforcement Officials for Detecting and Investigating Terrorism and Organized Crime

On May 19, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee, will award certificates to participants in a special training program on detection and investigation of terrorism and organized crime at the Police Academy in Danilovgrad. Advisor to the Minister of Interior, Ivan Milic, Head of the Criminal Department of the Montenegrin Ministry of Interior Sreten Radonjic, U.S. Senior Police Advisor to Montenegro, Larry Plott, and Director of the Police Academy, Husnija Redzepagic, will also attend the ceremony. The training was funded by the American people, through the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). FBI instructors conducted the training. 24 Montenegrin officials from the police, anti-terrorist and anti-organized crime units, customs, and prosecutor’s office participated in the training. The Ministry of Interior will form a special 9-member crime-fighting team as a result of this program.

The Special Surveillance Training is part of the 2005 U.S. Assistance Program for Police Reform in Montenegro, funded by the American people through the Department of State and the Department of Justice. The program provides training and equipment valued at over $2.5 million to support the reform and modernization of Montenegro’s police. This assistance also includes a Resident Police Advisor to the Police Academy and the Ministry of Interior; the renovation and equipment for the classrooms and other facilities of the Police Academy; equipment and training for a modern forensics laboratory; and training of police officers on investigating trafficking and other organized crime.

Journalists interested in covering the press conference should be at the Police Academy in Danilovgrad no later than 16:15 on Thursday, May 19.
