U.S. Donates Patrol Boats to Montenegrin Border Police

June 1, 2005

On Thursday, June 2 U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer Hoyt Yee will formally transfer two patrol boats for use by Montenegro’s Border Police to the Government of Montenegro, in Tivat. The patrol boats have been donated by the American people through the U.S. Customs Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Montenegrin Minister of the Interior Dragan Djurovic will participate in the ceremony.

The two patrol vessels, each 10.4 meters in length, were built by the Montenegrin manufacturer Navar from Tivat. The value of the boats and accompanying equipment is $425,000, and is part of the $2.9 million worth of equipment and training the U.S. Government began providing to Montenegro in 2004 through the Montenegro Border Security Program (MBSP). In addition to equipment and training, the United States also provided over $1 million through the MBSB to build new facilities and infrastructure at nine land border and administrative crossings in Montenegro in 2004.

The goal of this assistance is to help Montenegro fight smuggling, trafficking, terrorism and other cross-border crime.

Journalists interested in covering the event should be in Tivat, at Pine, no later than 13:45 on June 2.
