Ambassador Moore Visits Podmaine Monastery
Iguman (Abbot) Benedikt hosted Ambassador Moore at the Orthodox Podmaine Monastery near Budva on March 18th. Although much of the monastery was destroyed in an earthquake in 1979, it boasts beautiful 14th century frescoes and a handsomely restored "konak" (living quarters).
The monastery's history is also closely intertwined with Montenegro 's. According to the monks, 19th century Montenegrin leader Njegos penned much of his seminal work, "Gorski Vijenac (Mountain Wreath)," on the monastery's terrace overlooking the Adriatic Sea
