U.S. Donates Ordnance Detection Equipment to Regional Underwater De-Mining Center in Bijela
March 26, 2007
On March 27, U.S. State Department's EUR/SCE Office Director, Christopher Hoh, and U.S. Embassy Podgorica Charge d' Affaires, Marsha E. Barnes, will visit the Regional Center for Underwater De-mining (RCUD) in Bijela and mark the entry into service of a side scan sonar donated by the U.S. Government to the Bijela Center. The side scan sonar, worth $22,000, is a highly sophisticated mobile instrument that will enable the RCUD to more effectively locate mines and other unexploded ordnance underwater.
The American people, through the U.S. Department of State and the International Trust Fund for De-Mining and Mine Victims Assistance (IFT) in Ljubljana, have provided $1.2 million for the RCUD's activities. The RCUD's projects funded by the U.S. Government include extensive humanitarian de-mining activities in the border area between Montenegro and Croatia and Montenegro and Albania, de-mining of the Montenegrin part of the Adriatic Sea, purchasing and refurbishing boats and other equipment, as well as conducting several divers' trainings in the Center in Bijela.
Journalists interested in covering the event should be at the Regional Center for Underwater De-Mining in Bijela no later than 09:20 on Tuesday, March 27.
