U.S. Successfully Completes Montenegro Border Security Program
April 11, 2007
On April 12, the U.S. Embassy and the Montenegro Border Police will hold a press conference to successfully close out the U.S. Government-funded Montenegro Border Security Program. The program provided Montenegro Border Guards with the training, equipment, and technical assistance necessary to establish basic border interdiction and surveillance capacities so the Government of Montenegro can adequately secure their land and sea borders, thereby preventing illegal trafficking in weapons of mass destruction, goods, currency, and people.
The American people have donated over $3,000,000 worth of equipment to the Border Police including vessels, all-terrain vehicles, radars, and technical equipment. An additional $286,000 worth of equipment was donated to the Montenegrin Customs Administration including tool kits and contraband detection equipment. Over 150 border officers were trained on various border protection techniques both in the United States and in Montenegro.
Journalists interested in covering the event should arrive at the Ministry of the Interior building located on Sv. Petra Cetinjskog 6 no later than 13:45 on Thursday, April 12. For additional information, please contact Milena Zivkovic from the Montenegro Border Security Program at 069/501-736.
