U.S. Provides Assistance Supporting Rule of Law in Montenegro

July 14, 2005

On Friday, July 15, U.S. Consulate Podgorica’s Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee, Chief State Prosecutor of Montenegro, Vesna Medenica, and U.S. Department of Justice Resident Legal Advisor at the Embassy in Belgrade, Sam Nazzaro, will announce additional U.S. assistance to Montenegro’s judicial system to combat organized crime and corruption.

The assistance is made possible by the American people and includes donations of training equipment to Montenegro's State Prosecutor's Office. The assistance also includes the appointment of a U.S. Intermittent Legal Advisor for Montenegro who will provide new training programs in addition to sustaining current training programs managed by the U.S. Resident Legal Advisor in Belgrade.

The Department of Justice has been active in providing technical assistance and professional development and training programs for prosecutors in Montenegro. This assistance is aimed at enhancing Montenegro's capacity in the Rule of Law area, in particular to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate organized crime, human trafficking and other serious crime cases.

Journalists interested in covering the event should be at the Chief State Prosecutor's Office, Podgorica, no later than 11:40 on July 15th.
