U.S. Government's Official Position on State Status

May 9, 2005

The U.S. Consulate in Podgorica noted reports in Montenegrin media on May 8 that incorrectly represent statements made by Principal Officer Hoyt Yee during a meeting with representatives of the People’s Party.

Specifically, Mr. Yee did not make the statements that were attributed to him in the press, apparently based on a press release issued by the People’s Party, concerning Montenegro’s state status and/or integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions. In the meeting with members of the People’s Party, Mr. Yee repeated the well-known and frequently stated U.S. Government policy that it is up to the people of Montenegro to decide their own future, and that if Montenegro holds a referendum on independence, it should do so in a democratic and transparent manner that is fully consistent with the Constitutional Charter and international standards.
