U.S. Supports English Language Teacher Training in Montenegro

April 15, 2005

On the occasion of the completion of a six month mentor training course for 30 Montenegrin teachers of English, U.S. Consulate Podgorica's Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee, Minister of Education and Science, Slobodan Backovic, and Head of the Bureau of Education Services, Dragan Bogojevic, will participate in an awards ceremony at Sutjeska Primary School in Podgorica on Saturday April 16.

The mentor training course was funded by the American people, and implemented through a joint project of Senior English Language Fellow Cindy Rauth and the Montenegrin Ministry of Education and Science. The English teachers will become mentors to student teachers completing their practicum in Methodology of English Language Teaching at the Faculty of Philosophy in Niksic.

The training started in November 2004 and included four weekend training sessions for current primary and secondary school teachers of English. The training provided peer observations, feedback sessions, and hands-on work with student teachers. Teachers also received training on formulating and expressing one’s opinions in a constructive and helpful manner, respecting diversity and difference, and reviewed current methods and techniques of language instruction.

As a result of this mentor training, future students throughout Montenegro studying to become teachers will receive guidance and support in their practicum from qualified, trained mentors.

Journalists interested in covering the awards ceremony should be at the Sutjeska Primary School Teachers’ Staff Room, no later than 17:15 on Saturday April 16.
