U.S. Organizes Conference on Domestic War Crimes Trials

The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Overseas Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) along with the Humanitarian Law Center will sponsor a three-day conference: "Domestic War Crimes Trials - Taking a Lead", in hotel "Maestral", Milocer, Montenegro, from October 18-20, 2006. OPDAT is a program managed by the U.S. Embassy Belgrade Resident Legal Advisor's Office.
The conference, organized in conjunction with the U.S. Ambassador for War Crimes Issues and the Humanitarian Law Center, will feature a comprehensive gathering of top prosecutors, judges, police investigators, victim/witness coordinators and witness protection officers from the region (Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia). They will discuss the achievements and future challenges in domestic war crimes trials as well as issues relating to regional cooperation. The conference will feature distinguished U.S. and ICTY officials such as the U.S. War Crimes Ambassador, Clint Williamson, the ICTY Deputy Chief Prosecutor, David Tolbert, and Senior Department of Justice regional officials.
