U.S. Assists Coastal Water and Wastewater Improvements in Montenegro

April 26, 2005

On April 27, U.S. Consulate Principal Officer, Hoyt Yee; Deputy Prime Minister, Miroslav Ivanisevic; Acting Mayor of Budva, Veselin Marković; Deputy General Development Officer of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Vladan Raznatovic; Camp Dresser and McKee (CDM) Director, Robert Blake, along with the mayors of neighboring municipalities and managers of local water companies will attend a ground-breaking ceremony for the beginning of reconstruction of three wastewater pumping stations in Budva.

The Montenegro Coastal Water and Wastewater Improvements Project is funded with an $8 million donation from the people of the United States through USAID, and implemented by Camp Dresser and McKee, an American engineering firm. The project's goals are to improve infrastructure critical to the development of tourism and improvements to the environment in the municipalities of Budva, Kotor, and Cetinje. This donation is part of overall U.S. support in 2005 for economic development and environmental protection of Montenegro’s coastal region totaling $12 million.

Reconstruction of the pumping stations will direct wastewater away from beaches and shorelines, thereby reducing the current health hazards. The project involves several additional improvements in Budva’s water and wastewater systems, including construction of new storage tanks and piping, flow control, leak detection, and repair.

Media interested in covering the event should be at the bell in the Old Town of Budva, no later than 11:15 on April 27.
