Women Equality Day
27 August 2012
U.S. Embassy Consular Officer Maria Lane Gomez participated in a panel discussion on women equality organized by the American Corner in Podgorica on the occasion of Women Equality Day. Other guest speakers were handball trainer Sandra Kolakovic, Police Directorate spokesperson Tamara Popovic and entrepreneur Radojka Raznatovic, all successful women who accomplished significant results in professions still dominated by men.
In 1971, U.S. Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates that important historical event, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.
